For immediate release: Wednesday, February 11, 2004
Vancouver, WA: At its regular board meeting last evening, the C-TRAN Board of Directors unanimously approved Alternative Two, a new transit plan that would restore county-wide service and provide additional improvements throughout the C-TRAN service area. The plan calls for a 0.3% increase in the local sales tax and must be approved by a simple majority of Clark County voters. The action adopted by the Board includes:
For the past year, C-TRAN has worked collaboratively with the community in developing five service alternatives ranging from no new revenue up to a 0.6% sales tax increase (C-TRAN’s full taxing authority is 0.9% and currently collects 0.3%). Approximately 100 citizens attended the Board meeting and about 25 of them testified in favor of the Board taking action and moving forward on a revenue increase for C-TRAN.
“I would like to extend my appreciation to the Board of Directors for their clear and decisive leadership on this critical issue for our community” said Lynne Griffith, C-TRAN Executive Director/CEO.
In 1980, the citizens of Clark County approved a county-wide transit system, C-TRAN, to be funded with a 0.3% local sales tax. In 1999, when Initiative 695 passed, C-TRAN lost 40% of its revenue. Since that time, C-TRAN has maintained service levels by drawing on reserve funds. At the current rate of spending, C-TRAN will exhaust its available reserves in 2005.
